Vanessa Sciarra, Vice President for Legal Affairs and Trade & Investment Policy at the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) to speak at International Fastener Expo 2018

 

Los Angeles, CA, October 11, 2018— In July the United States Trade Representative (USTR) implemented an immediate 10 percent tariff on Chinese $34 billion worth of imported goods; and another $16 billion the following week. The tariffs focused on 818 Chinese products that contained “industrially significant technologies”; a few weeks later, another list containing 6,031 more products was released that taxed an additional $200 billion worth of imported goods. By the end of this year, total taxed imports goods could be expected to total $500 billion. What’s more, in January 2019, the 10 percent tariff will increase to 25 percent in January 2019.

The new tariffs have generated numerous questions amongst importers, distributors and manufacturers. In order to help the Fastener industry professionals understand and navigate the new regulations, Vanessa Sciarra, Vice President for Legal Affairs and Trade & Investment Policy at the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), will hold an informative session to help clarify and understand the Administration’s trade policy, including the tariffs being implemented under Sections 232 and 301.

Attendees will learn about the latest developments on how current trade policy may affect their businesses and strategies for managing the new trade restrictions. Vanessa will offer a clear understanding of the new policies and provide U.S. importers, manufacturers and distributors with a valuable insight of what to expect in 2019.

Topics will include:

  • Section 301 tariffs on Chinese imports;
  • Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports;
  • Strategies for minimizing supply chain disruptions and managing the impact of new trade restrictions;
  • Quotas: what are quotas, how do they work, and how do they relate to exemptions;
  • Exclusions: what is the process to obtain an exclusion;
  • Exemptions: are any countries excluded from 232 tariffs;
  • WTO Challenges over 232 tariffs;
  • And exclusive updates on the new NAFTA Agreement (USMCA).

The seminar will be held Tuesday, October 30, 2018 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in Las Vegas. Participants can join the session in the South Seas ballroom located on the 3rd Floor of Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
